    Hi!

Hopefully someone can help me work through a problem I have on my 1971 Saab 96 V4. Over the past week the indicators have been failing and now they don’t work at all, and there seems to be a problem with the rear tail lights as well.

I used a line tester on the rear lights (ignition off):
    – If I touch the + on left and right indicator it beeps
    – If I touch + on left indicator and left tail it beeps
    – Same for right
    – If I touch + on left indicator and left brake no beep
    – Same for right

I am not very good with electrics or the testing equipment but I think there is a major short in the wiring probably at the rear of the car.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should go about testing the circuts/wiring to track the fault.

I have tried working with the wiring diagrams for the 1971 Saab V4 but the quality, in Haynes and the Verkstadshandbok CD, are so bad I cannot work out what is what. Does anyone have a good quality wiring diagram.

If anyone can help it would be appreciated. Please respond in English or Swedish.

    Regards

    Gary McCnnell

    Just an idea!

Check the electrical connection socket to the trailer. Perhaps you have a short circuit there.

    Bengt – Thanks
Have opened the tow connection and checked all wiring, no shorts or misplaced wires, but the same fault appears when testing this as well. Will try dig deeper.

When I get strange electrical problems I always check for faulty ground connections. This can give all sorts of ”impossible” trouble. Good luck!

I can see why people find electrical faults a nightmare. I have been through the lighting circuts and found nothing that would cause the faults. I disconnected a number of wires to allow testing of the lines and when I plugged everything in again, the front right headlight no longer worked. I changed the bulb around and it still didn’t work. I took the fuse out and put it in again, and now everything works as it should.

I am not complaining that it is all working, but it would have been nice to find a fault and fix it so that I know the electrics are 100%.

I will keep an eye on the light and see if the symptoms return in the future. Only thing now, plug in a trailer and make sure the tow bar electrics are still functioning as they were.

Bengt, JanneH – Thanks for your input.

    Regards – Gary
