      Hi!

I have had to remove the rear bumper on our 1992 Saab 900 2.1 Automatic and I have come across a few problems. When I tried to remove the bumper bolts, 2 on each side, two of them broke off due to rust, the remaining two bolts are in bad shape as well.

Does anyone know how to replace these bolts, I have looked in the manual but it only informs you how to remove the bumper, not repair it.

I have two images the first is of the bumper bracket on the car so you can see the two bolt holes where I removed the bolts. The second is of the inside of the bumper where the boken bolt is.

Does anyone know what I can do to repair it, any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

About the broken bolts in the bumper.

Drill out the broken bolts and replace the old “nuts” with pop nuts.
OK you need a special tool to fit them but it will be strong.

Bengt – Thanks so much for the information. Have been working on the bumper and have salvaged two of the bolts by re-threading them. Test drilled the other bolts and it shouldn’t be too big a job to drill them out.

Had a look for the tool and nuts and found then in a number of places. The existing bolts are M8 but I think I will have to go for a tool handling M6, the difference in price to get M8 is about 600 SEK more. I think the M6 should be sufficient.

          Off shopping again tomorrow.

I would have grinded the old bolts down and then welded new ones on top of the old ones.
If the material is to weak to weld in i would have grinded the old bolts down then welded the new bolts in an ironbar that i had drilled holes in matching the old ones and then welded the whole thing on the bumper preferebly using a mig. The bumper would then get some millimeters further out but i dont think it matters that much.
The alternative is to get another bumper from the scrapyard.

Kaparn – Thanks for the info, unfortunately I don’t have access to a welder, not yet anyway, but on my shopping list. I checked local scrap yards but could not find one that matched the year. If I come across one in the future I will replace it.

Bengt – Got the tool and blind nuts. Worked perfectly and I think it will hold as there are still two existing bolts, one on each side.

              Rear bumper and towbar

All thats left now on this task is to finish the wiring for the towbar, then its onto the ABS system, dashboard light comes on now and then.
