      Hej!

I have read in an english SAAB-Forum that SAAB had a kind of Tuning-Rally-Kit available for Clubman-Rallys for the 99 Turbo in 1979.

It is said to have contained the following parts:

      * pistons with 6.5:1 compression ratio
      * injection Porsche 928 (metering-unit) with 911 air-flap
      * turbocharger T3 with bigger compressor

Was running at about 20 psi / ~ 1,38 bar of boost, pushing from 2000 rpm and giving around 220 hk and 310 Nms.

Does anyone know about this kit?

      Best Regards,
      Erik

Okay. As no one seems to know about it I assume it is a myth.

Anyway, I would like to find out which parts were used to build the group 2 engine for the 99 Turbo in the late 70s. 🙂
So to say, kind of recipe to build one, and if parts are readily available, where from.

From what I found out so far SAAB used the standard engine-block, crankshaft, rods, and cylinder-head.
Pistons were some forged Mahle or something with compression-ratio 6.5:1.
I assume the cylinder-head was nearly standard with ported channels? Bigger valves also?
Camshaft is said to be from EMS.

For the intake-system they used a Porsche 911 air-flap together with a Porsche 928 fuel-distributor, where they joined two exits with a t-piece to feed one injection-valve.
Does anyone know the BOSCH-numbers for these two Porsche-parts SAAB used?
        And which injectors were used?

Intake-manifold seems to be a normal one for Weber-DCOE-carburettors, but with small tubes welded on to fit the K-Jetronic injection-valves. Throttle-flaps for each cylinder put in between the collector-plenum and the DCOE-manifold, something like cut-off DCOE-carburettors.
The plenum is water-cooled, but although I know some pictures from the car in the SAAB-museum I didn’ figure out so far how the cooling inside was done?
Is there a normal radiator in it? Which is then connected with the heater-core or with an extra cooler at the front.

I read in an old article that SAAB used first the Garrett T3-turbocharger from the series-car with modified, bigger compressor.
Exhaust-manifold was a special weld together made from some tubes and flex-tubes, with external wastegate sitting on it and bypassing from the manifold to the downpipe.

Well, that is a lot of information and a lot of questions. But I hope we can clarify some of them.

Thanks for any input here on this subject, or by PM or Email.

        Tack!

        Med vänliga häsningar,
        Erik

The 220 hk kit Is a true story.

But Im not sure they sold any Kit. It was tested In 1979 and saab talked about selling 10 kits. The first Kit was a test kit.

          New pistons.
          Cam shaft
          Bigger turbo
          Porsche 928 Fuel injection.

If you modified the cylinderhead you should have 220 hk and 28 Kpm.
Im not sure about the boost, but the numbers you have sound correct to me.

I can write some more later.

              Hi

Can help You with pistons, ordered this summer reproduced ones and now used for few rallies.

                Hej!

Does anyone know the BOSCH-Numbers of the injection-parts that were used by Saab?

I heard about the air-flap-part of the K-Jetronic being from some Porsche 911 and the fuel-distributor from Porsche 928?

                Anyone know the proper numbers?

                Tack sa mycket!

                Best Regards,
                Erik

                  Here you have a problem.

I can check the numbers on the airflap and fuel distributer.
You can use a complete 928 injection.

When saab use the special plenum they used 911 turbo injectors.
But if you use orginal inlet manifold you can use orginal saab injectors whit (o-ring).

Injectors to k-jetronic don´t flow so much difference.

Check out the mercedes after market injector.

                    Hej!

No, I wont use the original inlet-manifold. 🙂

Would be nice if you can check the numbers.

I checked some pictures of Porsche 911 and 928 K-Jetronic. A small problem on the 928 air-flap woul be the position, where the outlet-tube is positioned (the tube, where the air is going to the motor). On 911 it is positioned on the side, on 928 in line.

                    Tack!

The air outlet from the air flap is Custom. You don´t use porsche orginal at all.

                        Hej!

                        Okay, I see.

                        So a K-Jetronic from Porsche 928 would do the job? I assume it is 928 4.4l? BOSCH-Number? 🙂
Or is there an important difference between air-flap 911 928?

Does anyone have pictures from the custom air-flap outlet?

                        Tack!

                        Best Regards,

                          I have got a Porsche 928 K-Jetronic unit.

Should I run it with the original Saab-injector, or should I start directly with injectors from Porsche 911 Turbo?

                          MVH,
                          Erik
