      Hello!

I have some trouble or at least strange behaviour of the cooling on my Rally-V4 (1760cc, dubbelblas, korsinsug, 7.6 camshaft).

I have removed the belt driven ventilator and put an electric fan in front of the radiator (big one from Saab 99). The temperature rises over the half on the gauge just before the red, then it is suddenly dropping down to normal. This repeats all the time.
The temperature switch is integrated in the tube that connects the thermostat housing with the top left connector in the radiotor.
With the belt-driven fan the temperature seems to behave normal, staying in the middle all the time.

Any idea what is the problem?

      Tackar.

      Best Regards,
      Erik

Do you hear the fan start before the temperature drops? Can you activate the fan by hand and see what happends to the temperature?

          Hi!

Hm, I am not sure. Have to drive again probably.
But if I remember correctly the temperature rise and fall is not in direct conjunction with the fan switching on.

I will put a manual switch instead of the temperature-switch next weekend and see what happens – good idea!

Will report as soon as I have news.

          Thanks!

          Erik

Okay, took me some time but now I have checked a little further.

I disconnected the electric fan and installed the belt-driven fan again. Same behavior. Now I am quite sure that the issue must be the thermostat that opens too late.

Should I use a standard 83°C-thermostat in my group-2 engine?
Or do I need to modify something?

            Cheers,
            Erik

Anybody an idea concerning the thermostat? 💡

It may not have to be the wrong temperature, it might just be old and ”sluggish” so it doesn’t open smoth at the specified temperature. I have had that problem on several old thermostats, engine nearly boils before they release the water to the radiator.

Hm, sounds exactly like what I have here… 😯

I have one new thermostat from Feltema, but it is an 88°C. Might be opening a bit late. Then I have to check where I can get an 83° thermostat. Found some on ebay, but all of them are 88°… 😥

                    Hi!
Take out the old ”sluggish” thermostat and put it in a sauce pan with water and put fire on the stov!
You can see the behavior of it and if needed put in some dishwasher detergent and get it cleand!

                    Saved for the summer!

I cleaned and tested a summer thermostate a couple of days ago by boiling it in dishwasher detergent with an thermometer.

Do I have to say that my wife wasn’t at home by the time…

Okay, this is worth a try. Will test this in a couple of days when I have time.

Hello. Read the Saab Sport and Rally tuningspecifikations for group 2,Saab rekomend when temperatur is over +15 C,no thermostate at all.Down to -15 C use a modified thermostate, use a hacksaw and make a skrewdriver slot on the topp of the centerskrew, melt down the welding and skrew down 4 laps.Drill 3 holes, 3mm dia, outside the thermostateseat, under – 15C use a standard 83 C thermostate. I think this small holes is importend, you allways get some cirkulation and no airpocket in the thermostatehousing. God luck Mats
