Typical, it has been a while since I worked on the car and today I took it out for a drive and things aren’t as they should. The easy one is the backfiring when I try and start the car, I will be stripping the carb, setting the valves and timing, so that should sort that out.
The real problem was when driving out of the parking area to come home, there was a clunking noise coming from the front left, I think, wheel. It stopped when the car was going straight but returned a few times when turning sharp corners. I imagine it has something to do with the drive joints, but which part. Before pulling everything apart, anyone got any ideas on how to check the different parts of the drive train so that I can isolate the problem. I have looked at the manual but so far it only describes how to remove and re-install, no information on testing the different parts or what could be causing the noise.
Any advice would be appreciated.
januari 24, 2014 kl. 16:13 #173077It sounds like it’s the outer drivejoint. If the sound arises when you turn left It’s the right joint and vice versa.

Check the CV-joint boot. If it´s broken you perhaps have gravel and dust inside the CV joint. You can take the joint apart and clean balls 😮 and inside the joint.

januari 24, 2014 kl. 18:50 #173086It also depends on how the sound sounds, so to speak. :duck Describing a sound is difficult, but both joints and bearings tend to produce a more grinding kind of noise. A distinct clonc could come from the brake caliper moving.

Haven’t been able to get the car out for a drive yet but on Sunday I managed to get the car up on the lift and had a good look around and behind both front wheels. Nothing seems out of place and nothing is loose. Tried rotating the wheels to hear if there were any strange noises, but nothing, suppose it need weight on it to put pressure on the bearing if there is something foreign in them. Hopefully tomorrow I will get the car out and see if the noise is still there and where it is coming from.
I did find a small split in the rubber boot on the front right wheel, a little grease is seeping out, I will put that on my list of things to replace. I have a new boot that is split so that you can glue it together once you fit it, but would I be able to clean out the bearing while everything is still on the car, or is it easier to remove the complete driveshaft and clean it off the car.
januari 29, 2014 kl. 16:10 #75895A split boot is just a temporary fix, you will need to dismantle the joint soon anyway. And if the sound really comes from the joint there is nothing for it, you have to get it out of the car right away.

Thanks for the info. I managed to get the car out of the garage on Saturday to drive it around to try and find out where the noise was coming from. Typically, no clunking noise. So I drove the car to a meeting and no noises there or back. I drove in circles with full lock, both forwards and backwards, still nothing.
All I can think of is that something, like a stone or chunk of ice, got stuck somewhere in the front wheel and came loose when I had the car up on the lift, or melted. At least I know the one boot is split so I will take care of that as soon as I can. As for the clunking, I will just have to keep my ears open for it in the future.
One thing I noticed with the car, the Verona green is a very nice colour against the snow.

Now to get back to the original list of things that need done to the car. Hopefully the clunking won’t return and I can enjoy driving the car. -
