Hello!
I am halfway through taking of the old paint which is in very bad condition. Seems to be thermoplastic paint (car came from the US), so I take it of completely.
I have some minor spots that need repair. After that is done I want to start preparing for the paint-job. I am wondering how you guys have done this?
As the gelcoat is scratched in some places I wanted to put on a polyester filler as the first basis to seal of the glasfiber. Then go on with an EP or HS filler and then the final paint.
Any feedback here? 😉
Best Regards,
Erikdiscuss this with the person who will be involved with painting the car instead. A lot of mistakes can then be avoided. It is better to use products that are fully compatible with the final coat instead of buying different brands and get unpleasant surprises in the end.
if it is in bad condition I would remove the paint, (grinding only) and then repair the scratches and then paint with something and leave it like this for months or more. Glasfiber is not a ”dead” material and it is always something that appears after a while……..
Yes, I will remove the old paint at first. The front / hood is nearly done (with a heater-gun and spattle). Worked very good and the old paint went of in big pieces without much effort.
There are only some small spots that need to be filled up with polyester resin. After that is done I will possibly leave it alone for some time (weeks?). Then I was told to heat the body up in the paint cabine and then spray on the first layer that will be a polyester filler (Standox Spritzplastic). That is some kind of gelcoat I was told by a professional.
After that I will leave it again for some time (weeks?) and then do the final filler and paint.
Any problems with that way? :wrench
