I wonder if someone can help. I am restoring some veteran roof racks and need advice on the paint I should use.

So far I have cleaned the metal and sprayed it with a zinc spray, however this is a matt gray and good as a undercoat. What would be the best paint/colour to finish them off.

You better try on something else first, most zinc coatings are rubbish as a primer for another paint. It usually reacts heavily and you could end up with cleaning off all the old paint totally. It works fine for rust protection only on metal items though.
Paint some scrap metal and follow up with prefered colour, some sort of a rim paint would do fine. A lot more durable than standard colours, silverish look and not so very glossy.
Another option is to find hammerite in spray, I think it is available somewhere? Or spray tin hammerite with a spraygun. If applied thin you wont get the full ”hammerite” effect, just a nice coating.

Stefan – Thanks for the information. As far as I know AD Center stocks Hammerite in spray cans. Will see if there are other similar products and report back.

I have sprayed the roof rack and I am pleased with the results.

I first sprayed it with Branford Zinkspray (Haraldnyborg) and then two thin coats of ”Hobbyfärg med metalleffekt” (Biltema). The finish isn’t too dazzling and seems to be appropriate when you see it close up or from afar.

Will give it another 12 hours to harden properly before putting it all together again.

Before assembling the roof rack and test fitting it to the 96 I was wondering if anyone could help me locate new bolts for it. In English they are referred to as Stove Bolts.

It is easy to find sets of metric bolts that look exactly the same, but these are old and are imperial (inches). Does anyone know of a place in Skåne, preferably near Bjuv/Helsingborg that would stock these, I need 3/16, 1/4, 5/8, and I will need a few nuts as well.

Even a link to an internet supplier would be a good alternative. – Thanks in advance.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the set of roof racks I am working on can find details on my site , just scroll down on the legend on the left and you will find links to them.

Now it is assembled and fitted to the 96.

The renovation worked better than I had expected, fun when things turn out for the best. Only thing left is the new bolts, hopefully next week.
