I wonder if someone can give me some ideas as to why my 1973 Saab 96 would be shuddering when pulling away and also when slowing down using the gears.
When I start to drive there is shuddering as the clutch is released and stops once the car is moving along.
When I change down gears to slow down, from 4th to 3rd, the car shudders, but if I slow down most of the way with the brakes without assitance from the gears and then change down it doesn’t shudder.
I have heard before that this could be a clutch problem, the car was sitting for nearly two years without being used and has always been used with the free-wheel engaged. I don’t use the free-wheel at all prefering to use engine braking in addition to the brakes.
When I read through the Haynes manual they don’t mention shuddering as a clutch problem but a possible engine or gearbox mount failure. Out of curosity, how do you check the engine and gearbox mounts to see if they are in good condition or not.
Anyone have any ideas as to what I can check to try and find out what the problem is.
september 30, 2013 kl. 10:25 #59811I had this problem with my 96. It turned out to be that one of the nuts on the front enginemounts had come undone. I don´t know if it´s a bulletproof way to test mounts, but i usaly use a crowbar and bend a bit to feel if there is any play in them.
Christian: Thanks for the tip, have been out and checked both front engine mounts and the nuts are tight and I can’t find any play in them.
Mats-Ove: Checked the gearbox mount, tight as well.
So it seems the engine/transmission is in securely, what else can it be, seems like it is becoming more and more like a clutch problem. Any way of checking the clutch without removing the engine and gearbox?
