The fast road engine on my ’83GL is almost complete, so i will hopefully have some time for my EMS, but i also have another project running alongside this one, my Citroen AX rally car, so my time will be divided.
My EMS is quite a rare car over here in England, it has not rust and has been well cared for by it’s previous 3 owners, full service history and 78000 miles has kept it looking great.
I am very much in a dilema with the external appearence of the car, i want it to look like the ’76 rally car, silver with green stripes, but i also want to keep it original, when i was in Sweden in the summer for the midnight sun rally i was inspired by the two 99’s in the ’works’ colours.

I have the original soccerballs, but i like the minilites more, the interior is excellent. Currently the engine and gearbox have been removed, the water pump failed when i did my last speed event, probably the sustained 6500rpm caused it
I am building quite a special engine, similar to my 99GL only more powerful, i am also hoping to fit some special 4-speed competition gears and final drive with LSD. The suspension will also be improved, but more about those later.Wonderful car you have there David, to bad about the engine though but with a new waterpump it will sure run like a dream again! 🙂
In my opinion you should keep the exterior original, I just love theese silver EMS. Run it with grace along those english country roads!

I have thought about getting another early 99 to rally, but finding a good one over here is not so easy and i already have too many cars.
I will keep the car in it’s original colour, but i will still carry out the improvements on the engine/gearbox and suspension, because these parts are easy to remove so it can be returned to it’s original specification.
Just for interest, did you know the later UK EMS cars had a black vinyl roof, Saab GB did this to make the cars more appealing because they were slow to sell.
When i have some time i will write about the new engine.
I will not be fitting the standard water pump, as much as i like the B series engine i think the water pump design effects it’s reliability, on a standard car it works quite well, but the engine will have RPM’s beyond 7000 so i will use an electric water pump.april 7, 2010 kl. 15:03 #156048With the onset of warmer weather i decided to get the EMS some fresh paint, an old friend is doing the bodywork/paint at his bodyshop, water based paint topped off with glossy scratch resistant two-pack lacquer. The bodywork on the EMS is in really good condition, the paint is a little bit tired and one of the doors is the wrong colour from a previous cosmetic repair.
When removing the stainless trim on the doors the usual rusty scab marks were evident, but nothing serious. The only corrosion was under the rubber trim on the front of the drivers rear lower wheel arch, not bad for a car that is over 30 years old. I think you must be able to count the number of UK EMS cars on one hand ?

The later UK EMS models had a vinyl roof, by order of Saab UK.

Small hole.
