I am renovating an pretty early SAAB 99, namely a model from 1973. My window rubber gaskets looked awful and the front window shield broke into peaces when lifted out. My guys doing the metal sheet work gave me the awful rubber gaskets to ”clean” and said ”you do it”. They were full of glue and other stuff. It took hours and hours to remove the glue etc (all stuff were used from petrol to water and detergents.. .. using a small Swiss army knife) . The rubber was elastic though. The gaskets could be reused. The new parts are the glass and the plastic-aluminium strips. The locking strips can be bought from the Svenska Saabklubben (SSKR). The window shield can actually be bought from SSKR to (but the one they offered was with a green tone .. typical in SAAB 99T). There is a Swedish firm which is producing window shields on demand also for SAAB 99. I bought mine from them. Just now I do not have the name of the (small) company.
So – bottom line – do not throw away old ugly gaskets if you have them. They often miracously survive.
