    Hello!

I am in the process of preparing a Saab 99 for rallye-use.

So I have some question which I hope some of you can answer.

    1. I need a ”skydsplat” for under the engine-compartment. I want to use ~5mm aluminium-plate. How can I best fix it under the car? How was this solved on the works 99?

    2. Engine-supports: I would like to strengthen the supports for the engine. I have read in an old article that the works-99 had extra-engine-supports. How was this solved?

    3. Rear-brakes: I know that the rear brake-calipers where taken from Porsche 914 (4- or 6-cylinder??). How can they be fit? Is it plug&play or do I need to do some modifications on the back-axle? Which brake-discs where used?

Thanks a lot for any help! 🙂

    MVH,
    Erik

you cut away the caliperholders from the rear axel and weld a new ”ears to the porsche calipers. its porsche 914 calipers you use, and the disc was lathing down in diameter.
the ”skyydsplåt is duralaluminium with 2 iron band in spring iron (dont know if the english word for fjäderstål is correct)
the engine support was the 2 orginal engine mounts , then instead of one in front of the gearbox , the use 2 more beside the only one , and the 6th one was a v4 engine mount like the 96 in the side from the cylinderhead .
    all the best Åke

Yeah, seems like there are not so many people into 99s…

Car is doing progress. Modified the exhaust the weekend with a third silencer and a catalytic converter (race-cat). I hope it will be silent enough now and not 99dBa…
Still some things to do, so.

Yeah, this is an option I am thinking about. But I haven’t decided yet if I go for Group H (=900-’88-brakes) or keep it for historic (=homologated brakes).

Ok, so it is not a direct fit. Hm, sounds a bit complicated to get this welded straight and proper with the new ”mounting-ears”.
BTW, I found out that it is caliper from Porsche 914/6. The 4-cylinder has a smaller piston in the rear-calipers. 6-cylinder-calipers is hard to find… 🙁

I know what you mean. In German it is ”Federstahl”.
What I meant, how do you mount the skydsplat to the car?

Ah, now I understand how this can work. I will have a closer look to the car. I think I can than figur out how to add the extra-supports.
BTW, I read somewhere that you can replace the original engine-supports / mount left and right with a competition-part from Ford Escort MK2. They are available in harder rubber and are said to be a direct fit without modifications.

    Tack!

    Hi Erik,

Regarding how the ”skyddsplåt” is attached, why not take a look at how these guys solved it:

Also, here is the complete project thread (nice reading!):

    Hallo

Ther Is a 99 rallycross for sale on http://www.resultatservice.com.
The rear axle are still on the car. That car used porsche brakes in the rear.
And the car could have some historic value.

914 brakes can you buy from the US. They sell used calipers for 85$.

    Small update here:

I have checked again the homologation-papers for Saab 99. The homologated rear brake-calipers have 33mm pistons, so it is from Porsche 914/4 and not 914/6 as I thought.
Makes finding calipers a lot easier, will get a set maybe on saturday… 😀

So my 99 rallye-build is doing progress. Car is finally registered in Germany, will bring the car to a workshop on saturday to get a proper roll-cage welded. They will install the sears, too. Will put in ”Sparco Rev” and 5-point Schrot racing-seatbelts.

After that I have to install a skydsplat under the engine and the petrol-tank.
And then i am ready for rallye!
